We’re On The Road To Nowhere

Metro, with their artificial urban growth boundary and their legions of planners geared toward forcing people into a mass-transit lifestyle, have proven themselves spectacularly unsuccessful in achieving that goal. They are, however, undeniably successful at placing home ownership out of the reach of many citizens in the Tri-County area under their control. Even better, as their planning has driven up the cost of land, Metro continues to buy land for greenspaces - land that you will likely never set foot in; further restricting the supply of buildable land in the region, removing land from the property-tax rolls, and driving prices ever upward.

It has suddenly occurred to a writer at The Oregonian (which supported both of Metro's successful measures permitting the regional government to buy more land for greenspaces) that an increasing number of folks are finding it hard to locate even apartments that they can afford to rent - let alone actually find a house that they can afford to buy.

Are the Portland Community College and Skagit Valley College threats related?

This is an open comment thread to try to answer the question above intelligently.  Any blog posts or news stories - link 'em here.  Any thoughts - post away.

Figure we should attempt to contribute here in the blogosphere…

The religion of Al Gore

In her most recent book, Ann Coulter makes the case for Liberalism as a religion to Liberals.  While I admit the notion is inflammatory, her argument is interesting in that she equates the practices and elements of a religion to the practices of liberals and the elements of liberalism, and she makes a good parallel.

As she says:

"Of course liberalism is a religion. It has its own cosmology, its own miracles, its own beliefs in the supernatural, its own churches, its own high priests, its own saints, its own total worldview, and its own explanation of the existence of the universe. In other words, liberalism contains all the attributes of what is generally known as 'religion.'"

Now in fairness, a lot of that could be equally directed at any ideology, but in the case of liberals she is correct that liberalism contains several elements common to religion, particularly in the environmental arena.
