The immigration bill revisited briefly: My skepticism is growing

I will try to take more time later to illustrate my reasons, but my wait and see attitude is waning, and my support is dwindling for the bill.

Listening to the radio I have to agree with both of the Commentators.  Ken Schram notes that doing anything without securing the border cutting off the influx of illegal immigrants is a wasted effort.  He is partially correct.  Border security is something I am very upset about.  All these years and nothing has been done beyond a wisp of a fence.

But he is only partially right.  Cutting off the source is fine, and necessary, but it does no good unless you deal with the people here already.  You also have to consider that no fence on the southern border is proof against all illegal incursions, and there is also a very porous northern border, as well as a couple of wet ones to the east and west.

A victory for the people!

Maybe a small one, but it’s a start

Sonics and Storm owner Clay Bennett says he’s “out of ideas” for landing an arena deal in Seattle and plans to file this November with the NBA for permission to move the teams after next season.

It will be a shame that two of the area’s major sports teams are leaving. Even so, it’s about time that multi-million-dollar professional sports organizations had their bluff called when they try to blackmail the public out of massive amounts of funding with threats to leave.

Let’s just hope the state legislature doesn’t decide that it’s an emergency and give them a half billion dollars just to spite the people, like they’ve done with other sports teams. If professional sports can’t stand on their own then maybe we don’t need them all that much after all.

Local Memorial Day outrage: Is this anti war idiots or just idiots?

I saw this on news tonight, and Michelle Malkin beat me to it tonight.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070529/ap_on_re_us/flag_vandalism

Vandals burned dozens of small American flags that decorated veterans' graves for Memorial Day and replaced many of them with hand-drawn swastikas, authorities said Monday.

Forty-six flag standards were found empty and another 33 flags were in charred tatters Sunday in the cemetery, authorities said. Swastikas drawn on paper appeared where 14 of the flags had been.

Members of the American Legion on this island off Washington's northwest coast replaced the burned flags with new ones Sunday afternoon.

The vandals struck again on Memorial Day after a guard left at dawn, the San Juan County sheriff's office said. This time, the vandals left 33 of the hand-drawn swastikas.

"This is not an act of free speech. This is a crime," Sheriff Bill Cumming said in a statement released Monday afternoon.

Cindy Sheehan gets her wake up call

All along I have written and believed that Cindy Sheehan was a useful idiot for the left, a sympathetic morally untouchable figurehead for the anti war anti Bush left.

And Like Watada, their latest useful idiot, as soon as her effectiveness and usefulness is gone, they will turn away.

Cindy finally got that message.  This is her message on Daily Kos.

I have endured a lot of smear and hatred since Casey was killed and especially since I became the so-called "Face" of the American anti-war movement. Especially since I renounced any tie I have remaining with the Democratic Party, I have been further trashed on such "liberal blogs" as the Democratic Underground. Being called an "attention whore" and being told "good riddance" are some of the more milder rebukes.

The Left, Unhinged

Memorial Day 2007, Playin' Possum on Senator McCain calling for an accountable civil service: (I add bold)

McCain… We should have left him in Hanoi…

The idea civil service has no accountability is crap. What they have is a little security - which seems unusual in today's race to the bottom environment… What they deserve is solidarity…

Not that they will get it. The greedy believe that the wolves will get the others, not them. They're wrong. Everyone is going to be sold out to the globalists who would "equalize" us with the Chicoms and Indians for the sake of profits - the profits of the globalist pirates who would enslave the rest…

Not that their calculations will be any more prescient. When the millions of Joe Averages are reduced to an angry mass - they will fall upon  "the winners" and kill them. The "winners" won't be able to win and the mobs won't be able to lose - because the mobs will have nothing to lose…

Memorial Day

The Editorial Cartoon in the Tacoma News Tribune today was a fairly simple affair - Black, with a mother and child at a gravesite.  The child clutching a flag, the mother with a tri-fold burial flag in her arm.

The caption was “A prayer for the day when we don’t have new names to mourn…”

All in all, a wonderful piece, highlighting the sacrifice of not only our servicemen, but their families.

But also thought provoking.

Because, in the final analysis, the only nation that has no new names to mourn, is a nation that has passed from history.

And the people of that nation would be dead, or enslaved, and have many, many more names to mourn.

Please do not wish me a “happy” Memorial Day

Sorry, but in my list of holidays, it is not a happy one any more.

A couple things occurred to me as I was thinking about what to write about.

First was a guy on a discussion list who wrote the whole wish and wished everyone a happy Memorial Day.

Maybe he meant no harm, but in a sense I was offended.  He is wishing happy celebration of a day to memorialize the death of patriots who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Sure they deserve acclaim, memorializing and respect.  But I dunno, I am not happy about it at all.  For every death given for our freedom there is a bereaving family. the loss of loved ones and often children now living without a parent.  "Happy Memorial Day" to my curmudgeonly mind seems too flippant.

I celebrate with grim sobriety the lives lost, the stories never told of valor and bravery and the heroes forgotten.

Aussies Have Way More Backbone Than Americans

Thanks, Teddy and George - for nothing.

Now ruminate on this:

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on
Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted
radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.

A day after a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to
Australia and her Queen at a special meeting with Prime Minister John
Howard, he and his Ministers made it clear that extremists would face
a crackdown.  Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to
Howard, hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the
country if they did not accept that Australia was a secular state,
and its laws were made by parliament.  "If those are not your values,
if you want a country which has Sharia law or a theocratic state,
then Australia is not for you", he said on National Television.
