Making sense of the senseless

Published by LSU under National

As soon as the news of the massacre had really sunk in, I waited for what I knew would inevitably happen.

The Blaming.

So far, we have the Devil, violent video games, Guns, hedonism, Guns, Al Qeada, Guns and occasionally Guns.

To me the whole concept of "why" is an exercise in futility.  As much as anyone could explain this, only the killer can come close, assuming he actually knew what drove him, and he took that with him to whatever awaited him in the afterlife.  All we get are speculations, theories, allegations, accusations and the like.

Even after hearing about and seeing his sick manifesto of dementia, there are no real answers.  He rambled on in such a bizarre fashion that the only reasonable conclusion is that he is crazy, a conclusion that was pretty much evident by him shooting up a college campus and killing 32 people.

Gun Control? VT Is The Final Straw.

Published by MaxRedline under Northwest

Virginia Tech was so pleased with their successful effort to create a gun-free zone.  And that simply opened the door to subsequent events.  While many on the left are using the massacre as a focal point toward more pressure for gun confiscation, the events at VT appear to be precipitating exactly the oppositeNASHVILLE — In a surprise move, a House panel voted today to repeal a state law that forbids the carrying of handguns on property and buildings owned by state, county and city governments — including parks and playgrounds.

As talk-show host Lars Larson noted in Human Events today,

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms … disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed one."

Fighting Back

Published by Aurelius under National

Every year, my kids present me with a form from school, whcih I must read and sign, and return for my childs file.

I call it the "Non-Agression Pact".  The School Districts call it a "Zero Tolerance Policy for Violence".  It essentially says that anyone fighting in school, or on school property, would be subject to various levels of punishment, regardless of who initiated the violence.  Kind of a Mutally Assured Destruction suicide pact kind of thing.

Being pointless to try to argue the administrators out of such a ridiculous policy, I simply sign the form.  However, when I return the form to my child, I also give them verbal instructions; to whit:

"If you are the one that throws the first punch (or kick, as both my kids are belts in Tae Kwon Do), you are in far more trouble with me than anything the School can do to you.
