Your Ride’s Gone Up

For the three to five percent of the Portland metro area residents who actually ride buses or choo-choos, it'll cost you another nickel (assuming you bother to pay at all).  Yep, starting in September, the cost of riding will increase in order to pay for upgrading ticket kiosks, sticking emission filters on buses, and of course, helping to pay for another light rail extension that nobody much wants.  Of course, many of the folks riding the choo-choos don't bother to pay for their ride, so the fare increase won't affect them, really.

On the other hand, if you happen to drive along the I-205 freeway, you're going to be affected.  But that's okay, because cars and trucks are really, really bad.  Expect lane closures and other delays for the forseeable future as crews work on the train line that nobody wants.  Why, by 2025, Portland State estimates that as many as 46.5 thousand boarding will occur every day on this line.  Which means that they expect the line to serve about 23000 people.  And if those estimates are as accurate as estimates for other lines, you can assume that maybe 10000 will ride the train.  In a metropolitan area of over a million folks, you can see how important it is to spend millions of gas-tax and other tax dollars so that a few people can ride trains.
