A tax-time tale

This is an old story about taxes. The numbers may need to be adjusted a bit, but I would bet that that adjustment would be very small. The article I am pulling the story from was published just a bit over four years ago. It still illustrates very simply what is wrong with a “progressive” tax system and the entire “tax cuts for the rich” mantra you hear from the left and from Democrats every time tax cuts are proposed:

Ten men go to dinner every day and order the same meal. Each meal costs $10, making $100 in all, but they decide to pay the bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four, being poor, pay nothing. The fifth is better off, so he pays $1. The sixth pays $3, the seventh pays $7, the eighth pays $12 and the ninth pays $18.

Your Ride’s Gone Up

For the three to five percent of the Portland metro area residents who actually ride buses or choo-choos, it'll cost you another nickel (assuming you bother to pay at all).  Yep, starting in September, the cost of riding will increase in order to pay for upgrading ticket kiosks, sticking emission filters on buses, and of course, helping to pay for another light rail extension that nobody much wants.  Of course, many of the folks riding the choo-choos don't bother to pay for their ride, so the fare increase won't affect them, really.

There Must Be A Lot Yet To Learn

In less than a month, 14 out of 20 captive-bred and highly endangered pygmy rabbits were killed - mostly by predators.  While the idea of captive-breeding and release into the wild seems noble, it's clear that some critical elements are missing from the program.

There are millions of your tax dollars at work, here.  There is no accountability; you have to rely on the judgement of managers at Oregon Zoo and a couple of other places.  Do you really want to do that?

Here's the approach at Oregon Zoo and at Metro, which ostensibly runs the place:  this "manager" isn't working out so well, so let's hire another "manager".  These are the folks behind the effort to breed and release endangered bunnies.

The Arbitors

Who, exactly, decided that The Reverrund (Hymietown) Jesse Jackson and Al (Tawana) Sharpton have suddenly become the arbitors of Freedom of Speech in America?  These are, by their own long history of speech and behavior, the least likely candidates imaginable for such a position - and there should be no such position available in the USA.  But let's assume that the USA no longer exists, and that freedom of speech no longer exists (don't look now, but it's closer than you may think).  What gives Hymietown and Tawana some special ability to decide for us what is, or is not, acceptable speech?  Is it because they have said and done terrible things during the course of their publicity-hound carreers?  They've been there, done that, and been given a free ride.  So those credentials allow them to decide?

Nope.

Aussie PM: No HIV-Positive Immigrants

Well of course the man's being accused of xenophobia, of blaming sufferers for their illness, yadda yadda yadda.  But in almost all cases of HIV infection, the sufferers ARE to blame for their illness, so tossing that out as an accusation of some sort against the PM is sheer stupidity.  And the once-trendy label of xenophobia hasn't aged all that well over time, either - it's pretty worn and shabby.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Prime Minister John Howard said Friday that people with HIV should not be allowed to migrate to Australia, and that the government was investigating whether it could tighten existing restrictions.

The comments triggered anger among HIV-AIDS workers, who accused Howard of xenophobia and of blaming sufferers for their illness.
