Unleash The Dogs
In 1994, a massively funded campaign by the likes of PeTA and the Sierra Club was targeted effectively against Oregon voters, resulting in approval of a ban on hunting cougar and bear with the aid of dogs. You may remember the barrage of television ads in the weeks and days leading up to the election. They were persuasive - but they were purely propaganda. But voters were swayed, and voted in the ban. As a result, the predicted increase in animal/human conflict has come to pass.
The Oregon legislature, considering House Bill 2971, which would allow ODFW to appoint agents with permission to use dogs in pursuit of cougar and bear, was met with antagonism from the Sierra Club side, which maintained that the bill "violates the spirit of Measure 18" and contravenes "the will of the people". Kind of makes you wonder why they're so quiet as the same legislature engages in tinkering with Measure 37, which voters passed by an unprecedented margin.
