Real reform on felons? Or some reform and felon suffrage?

Published by SVC Alumnus under Northwest, Washington

With bipartisan sponsorship, 10 days ago the State Senate, "unanimously approved Senate Bill 5070, which would comprehensively restructure the way the state Department of Corrections (DOC) incarcerates, treats, releases and supervises felons in order to reduce recidivism" if State Senator Mike Carrell, R-Lakewood is to be believed.  If you believe Democrats more than Republicans, State Senator Debbie Regala said in a press release that also listed all the bill's goodies - “Make no mistake: This is not a silver bullet. It’s a work in progress. This bill takes a reparative re-entry approach, using evidence-based research provided by the Washington Institute for Public Policy.”
(Note: The Washington Institute for Public Policy is a state government think tank.)

In Case You Missed It… Minority GOP not powerless in Olympia

[Hat-tip: Senate Republican Caucus Newsflash via e-mail]

Recently, The Columbian kindly did a story about the attempt by Washington State Senate Republicans "to denounce a bill that says public schools in Washington may not offer abstinence-only sex education."  Worth a skim.

Kulongoski Backs Real I.D.

Just kidding.  He hates it.  Despite his concerns about cost (you know Governor Ted - he just hates to have to spend money) and identity theft (in a state flooded with illegal aliens who can purchase Social Security cards on the streets of Woodburn for as little as $30 a pop), our always forward-thinking Governor is allegedly "urging" our stalwart "lawmakers" to get cracking on a fast-track toward compliance with the tougher federal standards.  Needless to say, this idea is provoking serious debate in Salem; some strays from the fold are saying that it's high time Oregon stopped giving away drivers' licenses to illegal aliens, while the more faithful hew to the Lorna Young Book Of Psalms, which says that all people are entitled to drive.  The latter are calling for establishment of a "drive-only" license; apparently unaware of the fact that that is precisely what Oregon has offered for years - which is precisely why an ODL is not accepted as proof of identification in the basically unimportant parts of the USA (like Florida).
