Northwest Funnies

Published by MaxRedline under Northwest

In Portland, a couple of examples of Your Government At Work have pinged on the radar:  Portland Tribune reports that the Multnomah County attorneys were cut off from access to vehicle records for a bit because they apparently owed forty cents to Oregon's DMV.  It must be admitted: Things Look Different Here.  Really different.

Yet at the same time, that marvel of important news dissemination, The Oregonian, moves a few ads to one side in order to ponder the pressing question of Who Will Keep Portland Weird?  Between Oregon state governmental agencies, Portland City Council, Metro, and Multnomah County, it really doesn't seem as though we have anything to worry about on that score.  But darn:  Ric Romero (just kidding, it's some guy named Brinckman) breathlessly reports that area rents are rising!  Businesses are struggling!  "Creative" types are being edged out!  Look at the big picture, Romero: construction is booming as high-priced condo towers go up with massive public subsidies across the city.  There are plans in the works for more street cars and choo-choos.  Metro "planners" are wonderful - just ask Homer and Sam.

Sam Supports The General

Published by MaxRedline under Northwest

Standing apart from the others, Sam Brownback affirmed his support for General Peter Pace; going so far as to add that he plans to send a letter in support of the General to the Bush administration.  As others bob and weave in regard to questions regarding the General's contention that homosexual acts are "immoral", Brownback made clear his support for the comments.  Whether this is good or bad in terms of his Presidential aspirations is unclear, but what is clear is that the man is willing to take a stand that many may deem unpopular.  By contrast, Mrs. Bill Clinton initially stated that it's for "others to conclude" whether homosexuality is immoral.  What incredible bravery!  The next day, she issued a statement that said that she should have said what somebody else said.  That's the kind of leadership we need in the White House!  Of course, the General never stated that homosexuality was immoral - he said that homosexual acts are immoral.  The media, as is so often the case, simply equated the two.
