Apparently Senator Barack Obama Does NOT Support the Troops

Posted by SVC Alumnus @ 8:18 pm

I used to be a Democrat and got this disturbing e-mail from U.S. Senator and Democrat Party Presidential Nominee Barack Obama's Exploratory Committee:

The time for waiting in Iraq is over. The days of our open-ended commitment must come to a close. And the need to bring this war to an end is here.

That is why today, I’m introducing the Iraq War De-escalation Act of 2007. This plan would not only place a cap on the number of troops in Iraq and stop the escalation, it would begin a phased redeployment of U.S. forces with the goal of removing of all U.S. combat forces from Iraq by March 31st, 2008 – consistent with the recommendations of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group that the President ignored.

The redeployment of troops to the United States , Afghanistan , and elsewhere in the region would begin no later than May 1st of this year, toward the end of the timeframe I first proposed in a speech more than two months ago. In a civil war where no military solution exists, this redeployment remains our best leverage to pressure the Iraqi government to achieve the political settlement between its warring factions that can slow the bloodshed and promote stability.

The U.S. military has performed valiantly and brilliantly in Iraq . Our troops have done all we have asked them to do and more. But no amount of American soldiers can solve the political differences at the heart of somebody else’s civil war, nor settle the grievances in the hearts of the combatants.

As the Sarge said and LSU found on YouTube, "One thing I don't like is when people back home say they support the troops, but they don't support the war.  If they're going to support us, support us all the way."

This is not 24.  Barack Obama is not David Palmer.  And Barack Obama doesn't support the troops "all the way".  Loser (of my vote, at least).

Further research has shown that the legislation in question has not made Thomas - the Congressional legislation search website.  The Senator has a press release on his Senatorial website that expands greatly upon his remarks.  Below are the key elements of his "plan" - res ipsa loquitor, the affair speaks for itself.

Key Elements of Obama Plan

  • Stops the Escalation: Caps the number of U.S. troops in Iraq at the number in Iraq on January 10, 2007. This does not affect the funding for our troops in Iraq. This cap has the force of law and could not be lifted without explicit Congressional authorization.
  • De-escalates the War with Phased Redeployment: Commences a phased redeployment of U.S. troops out of Iraq not later than May 1, 2007, with the goal that all combat brigades redeploy from Iraq by March 31, 2008, a date consistent with the expectation of the Iraq Study Group. This redeployment will be both substantial and gradual, and will be planned and implemented by military commanders. Makes clear that Congress believes troops should be redeployed to the United States; to Afghanistan; and to other points in the region. A residual U.S. presence may remain in Iraq for force protection, training of Iraqi security forces, and pursuit of international terrorists.

  • Enforces Tough Benchmarks for Progress: These 13 benchmarks are based on President Bush's own statements and Administration documents and include:
    • Security: Significant progress toward fulfilling security commitments, including eliminating restrictions on U.S. forces, reducing sectarian violence, reducing the size and influence of the militias, and strengthening the Iraqi Army and Police.
    • Political Accommodation: Significant progress toward reaching a political solution, including equitable sharing of oil revenues, revision of de-Baathification, provincial elections, even-handed provision of government services, and a fair process for a constitutional amendment to achieve national reconciliation.
    • Economic Progress: Requires Iraq to fulfill its commitment to spend not less than $10 billion for reconstruction, job creation, and economic development without regard for the ethnic or sectarian make-up of Iraqi regions.
  • Should these benchmarks be met, the plan allows for the temporary suspension of this redeployment, subject to the agreement of Congress.
  • Congressional oversight: Requires the President to submit reports to Congress every 90 days describing and assessing the Iraqi government's progress in meeting benchmarks and the redeployment goals.
  • Intensified Training: Intensifies training of Iraqi security forces to enable the country to take over security responsibility of the country.
  • Conditions on Economic Assistance: Conditions future economic assistance to the Government of Iraq on significant progress toward achievement of benchmarks. Allows exceptions for humanitarian, security, and job-creation assistance.
  • Regional Diplomacy: Launches a comprehensive regional and international diplomatic initiative - that includes key nations in the region - to help achieve a political settlement among the Iraqi people, end the civil war in Iraq, and prevent a humanitarian catastrophe and regional conflict. Recommends the President should appoint a Special Envoy for Iraq to carry out this diplomacy within 60 days. Mandates that the President submit a plan to prevent the war in Iraq from becoming a wider regional conflict.

The plan is contradictory - the redeployment "will be planned and implemented by military commanders" when the generals and admirals are going to be redeployed by the U.S. Senate.  Benchmarks met to stop the withdrawal.  I could go on.

I am not a soldier - my disabilities render me ineligible for military duty - but I believe very few warriors would support this proposal.

Thank God we didn’t have Senators like these after Dunkirk and the fall of the Phillipines in WWII, or some of most us would be speaking German right now and some of us would be lampshades.<p>Senator Obama is "relatively young, seemingly gifted and partly black" to use a twist a time-warp expression from my youth.  He’s a tabula rasa right now and herein lies his current appeal.  Oh, and the pompous Sen. Senator Obama, to me, is trying to run to the left of Hillary while masquerading as some moderate guy we can all relate to (like Bill Clinton).
As to the undermining of the war effort, I think the problem is a lack of moral clarity over there in D.C.

This is fantastic. All the more reason to elect the man. It’s exactly what should’ve been implemented years ago for Iraq.As for this blogger, I’m glad you think troops are defined by their mission, not as human beings. I’m glad you think soldiers should have any say in where they go or what they do, seeing as it’s the president’s right and duty to order the troops and military action. The troops duty? To answer "yes sir, Mr. President, sir". Saying a prospective president taking charge of the troops is a sign of no support (this plan has to do with Iraq support, btw, not anything to do with troop support) would be like comparing an employer telling employees of manufactured parts that they will be switching to new parts production. That doesn’t oppose the workers at all, now does it? Nope. Thank God you’re not a Democrat anymore, we don’t need the likes of you giving us a bad name. All the same, enjoy the next four years…. I sure will be.
