No Doughnuts For You!

Multnomah County Commissionperson Lisa Naito always knows what's in your best interests, bless her little pea-pickin' heart.  "Gay" marriage was in your best interests, and so she and some of her closest friends tried a little end-run to make that happen on your behalf - and of course, without your knowledge.  After the resulting media love-in subsided a bit, it turned out that…well, darn…Lisa and her pals may have thought it was the best thing since sliced tofu and lima beans, but, well - they kinda lacked the authority to pull something like that off, and so the whole thing got slapped right back at them.  Things probably would have gone straight to Hell in a handbasket from there, but some thoughtful custodial staff installed a litter-box adjacent to the Council chambers.  With the self-clumping stuff, so the girls didn't show any telltale signs under their claws when they hit the chamber.  Very thoughtful!

Hardly Surprising

The Vancouver fishwrapper is once again pushing for light rail (accurately referred to as "loot rail" by one astute commenter) in an editorial extolling the virtues while downplaying any possible negatives.  The Columbian rallied behind the Portland/Metro/Tri-Met "vision" of a light-rail "extension" into Clark County in the mid-1990's; a "vision" (or nightmare) soundly rejected by Clark County voters at the time.

Fear not, Clark Countians: loot rail will come your way.  After Portland area voters twice rejected "extensions", our "leaders" found creative ways to build them anyway - and discovered along the route that they really don't need to put such massive spending issues to a vote, because common citizens are obviously too stupid to mark the "yes" oval.  You'll get light rail, in good time.  Whether you want it or not, whether you're given an opportunity to approve it or not, you're going to get it.  Because your politicians, like ours, know what's "best" for you.

A Record Low For Bush.

It's official: President Bush is nuts.

Two U.S. Border Patrol agents surrendered to federal marshalls yesterday to begin serving eleven and twelve-year prison sentences for protecting our southern border.  Their crime?  Shooting an illegal alien drug smuggler toting 743 pounds of marijuana across the border.  Bush could - and should - have intervened, yet chose to stand idly by while to agents were incarcerated.  One can scarcely imagine the effect that his monumental stupidity will undoubtedly have on the rest of our agents.

Not only is it stupid, it comes very close to reckless endangerment of national security.

"This is the worst betrayal of American defenders I have ever seen," Rep. Dana Rohrabacher said of the president.

"It's shameful this was done by someone who is in the Republican Party," the California Republican added in comments coinciding with the jailing of agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean.

Woman Claims Dog Feces Is Political Expression

Originally by way of Ace 'O Spades

the lawyer for an ex-professor accused of leaving dog feces at a congresswoman's office said her client's actions qualify as protected speech under the First Amendment.

Take one guess the political parties of the professor and the politician, wait for it…

Kathleen Ensz faces a misdemeanor charge of "use of a noxious substance." She is accused of taking dog feces from her backyard, wrapping it in a political mailer from Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, and leaving it at the Republican's office, according to court documents.

Ensz, a Democrat, was angered by repeatedly receiving mailings from Musgrave, the documents said.

Now guess what the ex professor taught…

Ensz, 63, a retired French professor from the University of Northern Colorado…

Tunnel almost buried

Mayor Nickel’s pipe dream for Seattle is nearly buried. Now thanks to the childish stubbornness of the Mayor and the Seattle City Council the funds to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct may be allocated to other things. From the Seattle Times:

Nickels on Wednesday unveiled a new, smaller viaduct proposal that he said would shave $1.2 billion from the $4.6 billion estimated cost of the previously proposed six-lane tunnel.

After a meeting between Nickels, Gov. Christine Gregoire, House Speaker Frank Chopp and other officials, the governor released a statement saying the proposal doesn’t meet her timeline for a Seattle vote on viaduct replacement options. She has said the vote must occur before the Legislature adjourns April 22, but the city proposed an April 24 vote.

The statement also said the assumptions contained in Nickels’ new tunnel plan hadn’t been verified the state Department of Transportation.
