Union Backs 1st Amendment
Many people hate unions - and in particular, the Teacher Unions. However, when they aren't dumping money into Democrat pockets, unions can occasionally serve a good purpose. This is one of them.
After the Portland Tribune broke a Dec. 15 story about growing teacher dissatisfaction against Jefferson Principal Leon Dudley, the administration sent out a memo to teachers saying they could not give interviews to reporters unless the interviews “have been approved.”
On Jan. 10, Miller, the president of the Portland Association of Teachers, struck back with a newsletter to his members, calling the memo “management through intimidation.”
“It’s as if someone … forgot about the First Amendment of our federal Constitution,” wrote Miller, adding that teachers still are allowed to speak to reporters without permission during breaks or before or after work. “It’s called the right to free speech.”
