An Early Christmas Present From Ethiopia

Ethiopia sent fighter jets into Somalia and bombed several towns Sunday in a dramatic attack on Somalia's powerful Islamic movement, and Ethiopia's prime minister said his country had been "forced to enter a war."
It was the first time Ethiopia acknowledged its troops were fighting in support of Somalia's UN-backed interim government even though witnesses had been reporting their presence for weeks in an escalating battle that threatens to engulf the Horn of Africa region.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi went on television to announce that his country was at war with the Islamic movement that wants to rule neighbouring Somalia by the Qur'an.
"Our defence force has been forced to enter a war to defend (against) the attacks from extremists and anti-Ethiopian forces and to protect the sovereignty of the land," Meles said a few hours after his military attacked the Islamic militia with fighter jets and artillery.
Here we (The United States, Europe, China, and anyone else threatened by radical Islam) have a wonderful opportunity to support an ANTI Islamic Radical force in Africa. All it will cost us is some guns and butter.
And just in case you think we don't have a dog in this fight:
People living along Somalia's coast have reported seeing hundreds of foreign Muslims entering the country in answer to calls from the Islamic militia to fight a holy war against Ethiopia.
The Islamic group's often severe interpretation of Islam raises memories of Afghanistan's Taliban, which was ousted by a U.S.-led campaign for harbouring Osama bin Laden. The U.S. says four al-Qaida leaders blamed for the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania have become leaders in Somalia's Islamic militia.
The Islamo-Fascists behind the Islamic Court regime in Somalia are of the same school and stripe as those we are fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, among other places. They blow up night clubs in Indonesia, and conduct terror raids in the Philippines.
The Ethiopians understand that they are in a fight for their very survival. The least we can do is give them material support.
After all, they are fighting for us as much as for themselves.

I am lessand less convinced there is any real stake in our direct involvement in the phony war on terror - in fact I think our meddling is counterproductive generally. It was our meddling that set OBL off in the first place…
That said, I’m still in favor of guns and butter for Ethiopia. A little more meddling there won’t make us any enemies we don’t already have. But what would be far better would be to twist some Arab arms and get them to do the meddling. This is another case where Saudi Arabia should be the front men. After all, it’s their religion run amok…
